Pandyan Invasion
1284 CE
Pandyan Invasion
Overview
After the death of Bhuvanekabahu I, Yapahuwa lost the stability that had held the kingdom together. The Pandyan invasion followed quickly.
The fall of Yapahuwa marked the collapse of its role as a functioning capital.
The Sacred Tooth Relic was taken, making the defeat not only military but symbolic.
The court retreated southward, and Yapahuwa gradually returned to a quieter sacred existence rather than a political one.
Historical Significance
This invasion ended Yapahuwa's brightest political chapter, but it did not erase the site's sacred importance or memory.
