Sacred Tooth Relic

Overview

When the Sacred Tooth Relic was brought to Yapahuwa, the fortress became more than a military refuge. It became the spiritual center of the kingdom.

In Sri Lankan political culture, custody of the relic symbolized rightful kingship as well as religious devotion.

A temple associated with the relic stood near the royal complex at the summit, linking rulership with sacred protection.

This association is one of the main reasons Yapahuwa still carries such symbolic weight in Sri Lankan memory.

Historical Significance

The relic transformed Yapahuwa from a defensive refuge into a place where sovereignty and sanctity met.
